This page is the beginning of a growing collection of words from collaborators and audiences.

I have always been more comfortable letting the music speak than speaking about myself. Over the years, however, musicians, dancers, administrators, and audience members have shared words that were generous and thoughtful, offered unasked.

What follows is not a complete record, but a first chapter.

I know I speak for my colleagues as well as myself to say what a refreshing change your work has been. The sound of the orchestra really transformed and I particularly appreciate the fact that you respond so immediately to what is in front of you. We are all much the better for it. I hope it isn’t too long until our paths cross again!” — Musician

“In your week with the symphony, it was obvious that you were an exceptional candidate. After several years working with many conductors, you stood out as the candidate unsurpassed in your ability to connect and communicate meaningfully with the musicians and work collaboratively with the orchestra to make something unique and important. What you demonstrated is so rare, and it deserves so much recognition.” — Musician

I’ve been watching this production of The Nutcracker since its premiere. Last night its glorious music sounded newly minted. I’ve never heard the orchestra play better. The sensitivity to the dancers, the tempi, and the beautiful colours made familiar passages sound newly orchestrated. I’m at the Opera House for my second Nutcracker of the season next week, and I can only hope it will sound as lush and compelling. Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing you conduct again! — Audience member

The curtain came down, and what an adventure it has been! Nineteen performances carried by a conductor who brings to every performance the energy of a first night. Thank you, Jean-Claude Picard, for the inspiration, the trust, and the shared passion.” — Musician

The Nutcracker, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, 2025 edition: the very best version ever! A heartfelt thank you to Jean-Claude Picard for his energy, his joy, his constant sense of wonder, and his professionalism.” — Musician
